The Miller Place School District recently held a National Letter of Intent signing celebration, which recognized the accomplishments of six students from Miller Place High School who will be playing sports on the collegiate level after graduation.

Athletic coaches from throughout the District joined the student-athletes, who were wearing shirts emblazoned with their respective colleges’ logos, as they officially made their individual college decisions. Students’ decisions include:

The Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently held its annual Unity Day celebration to take a stand against bullying and instill a strong sense of camaraderie and inclusion within the student body. In partnership with the National Bullying Prevention Center, the Miller Place School District organized this event to unite students in kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Students showed their support by wearing a uniform shirt, their favorite team jersey, or a homemade shirt representing their favorite number to school. Each student in the school showcased his or her number to show that every moment and every student counts.

 

As part of a District initiative to promote childhood literacy, more than 120 Miller Place School District third-fifth grade students at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently participated in the New York State Public Library “Build a Better World” reading initiative. Over the summer students were encouraged to go to New York public libraries, check out and read books, and then look to reach different levels of achievement.

 

There were various levels of achievement and potential prizes to be won. To align with the theme of “Build A Better World”, the levels were an Architect, Construction Worker, Electrician, or a Building Inspector. Tasks to achieve each level included filling out graphic organizers, creating book reports and blogging about their literary experiences and critical interpretations. Student raffles ranged from a book baskets, family passes to Fink’s Family Farm, Sky Zone, and the grand prize of an Amazon Echo Dot. The culminating activity consisted of students celebrated their success by participating in a variety of fun educational games and word-based challenges during a “Build a Better World” –themed extravaganza at school. In recognition of their accomplishments, each student received a construction hat and reading certificate.

 

Miller Place High School football players and cheerleaders recently wore gold to their football game against Port Jefferson to support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The event was in honor of Tommy Scully, a Miller Place student who passed away last year at the age of 12 due to a brain tumor. The players wore gold socks and the cheerleaders wore gold ribbons to show their support for cancer research. By participating in this event, Miller Place School District students learned to give back to their community and support those suffering from pediatric cancer.

The Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School recently held its annual homecoming parade and football game to celebrate the spirit and excitement of the Miller Place community. The parade featured student-designed and decorated floats celebrating the history and culture of great American cities. Homecoming King Matthew Buscemi and Homecoming Queen Moksha Mehra rode in the senior class’s New Orleans-themed float.

The senior class was named the winners of a competition between the grades for the most innovative homecoming float, best hallway decorations, displaying the most class spirit, the most fundraising and collected the most goods for a food and goods drive. As the first place recipients, the senior class received $500 in prize money from the Student Council funds. During the homecoming festivities, each class also worked to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The parade began at the Miller Place Fire Department and culminated on the football field at the Miller Place High School. The Miller Place High School cheerleaders, groups of students from each school in the District, the Miller Place High School pep band and local community members marched alongside the different floats.

 

Miller Place High School students recently collected more than $9,000 to support cancer research during a spook-tacular Halloween-themed dance. The dance was held in memory of Joshua Faithfull, a Miller Place student who passed away in March, 2017, following a rare malignant melanoma of the brain and spinal cord.  During the dance students were able to decorate pumpkins, participating in a bean bag toss, face painting, a mummy wrap and more. Students also raffled a Nintendo switch, tickets to a Rangers game and a spa gift card to help raise money to support cancer victims. All of the proceeds from the event were donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Incoming Miller Place High School 9^th grade students recently attended an orientation program to help them meet their classmates and become comfortable with the high school environment to prepare for the 2017-2018 school year. Students were offered an overview of the high school’s academic and social philosophies and were given a chance to meet some of the Miller Place High School staff.

 

The event is an annual initiative organized by the Miller Place School District to help students seamlessly transition from middle to high school.

 

Advanced Placement (AP) Biology students in the Miller Place School District recently participated in Stony Brook Medical Center’s Medical Simulation Training Day. Dr. Apostolos Tassiopoulos, Chief of Vascular Surgery, Residency and Fellowship Programs, introduced students to advanced medical processes and innovative procedures. In collaboration with members of his medical team and medical students, Dr. Tassiopoulos worked side by side with the students in the simulation lab, where they were able to see the concepts they’d learned in action. The Miller Place High School students were shown how the team of physicians and surgeons train and practice their own assessment skills using the latest equipment in modern surgical medicine.

 

This program was part of a Miller Place School District initiative to expose students to the latest in cutting edge research and medicine.

 

 

 

Miller Place High School recently hosted an art show to showcase the best student-created work from throughout the year. This was the culminating artistic event of the year, and part of the Miller Place School District’s rigorous arts program. During the showcase parents, families, teachers and students walked around photography, ink, charcoal, pencil, painting, digital and sculptural displays, admiring the artists’ creative work and discussing different artistic techniques. The projects on display exhibited a wide variety of concepts and themes, presenting both the breadth and depth of the Miller Place High School arts curriculum.

 

 

Miller Place High School recently announced the top graduating student for the 2016-2017 academic year. William Sussman achieved the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) of the 2017 graduating class with a weighted average of 101.40. Sussman is a National Merit Scholar, an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor, the Future Business Leaders of America CEO and president, the Mathletes team captain and a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language National Honor Society. Sussman plans to attend Yale University after graduation to study electrical engineering.
