Master Debaters

Miller Place’s master debaters from North Country Road Middle School’s Mock Trial Club recently competed in a tournament at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) against neighboring schools to showcase their knowledge of the law!

Leading up to the mock trial at SCCC, Miller Place’s club members worked diligently to perfect their legal arguments by memorizing affidavits, preparing opening and closing statements and forming questions to secure their side of the case. When they stepped into the courtroom, the Panthers put their knowledge to the test and showcased their questioning techniques, critical thinking and oral advocacy skills. Each team was presented with one case and worked with teammates to lead an in-depth investigation and a thorough presentation.

Congratulations to NCRMS’s defense team on winning both the performance and case categories and to NCRMS’s prosecution team on winning the performance category!

North County Road Middle School Gives Back

Spring has sprung and so have Miller Place students’ community service efforts! North Country Road Middle School in Miller Place is thrilled to share the several philanthropical initiatives that its middle school students have participated in over the last few weeks including visits to local veterans, fundraising for Autism awareness and fighting hunger in the area.

In honor of Veterans Appreciation Month in Suffolk County, fourteen members of NCRMS’s National Junior Honor Society visited the Long Island State Veteran’s Home in Stony Brook. During the event, students played cards, Monopoly, Jenga, and Checkers as well as listened to inspiring and courageous stories told by the local heroes. The event was a wonderful way for students to give back to Veterans who sacrificed so much for our freedom.

In support of Autism Awareness Month, students at NCRMS facilitated a fundraising initiative to raise money and emphasize the significance of inclusion.  Spearheaded by NCRMS teacher Nicole Farley and teacher assistant Mara Healy, members of the building’s student government sold blank puzzle pieces to students who then had the opportunity to design a unique puzzle piece and “fit” it on the wall. All proceeds were donated to the Autism Society to improve capabilities and services, increase public awareness about autism and provide the best national resource database and contact center specializing in autism.

The National Junior Honor Society also organized and executed a building-wide food drive to help families in the Miller Place-Sound Beach community and across Long Island. The building conducted a friendly competition between homeroom classes to see which class was able to collect the most amount of non-perishable and canned goods to donate to Long Island Cares, Inc. and The Harry Chapin Food Bank. Mrs. Hibbard’s homeroom class collected a total of 104 items and was named the winning class.

Miller Place Skypes with the Stars

North Country Road Middle School (NCRMS) in Miller Place is busy embracing the digital age with well-known children’s author Dusti Bowling. After recently completing Ms. Bowling’s first book Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, NCRMS’s Book Club welcomed the children’s author via Skype to gather insight on her writing secrets and have an in-depth discussion on their favorite book.

“Face-to-face interactions with professional writers like Dusti Bowling allow our students to gain knowledgeable insight into life as an author and encourages them to embrace their passions of reading and writing,” said Dr. Marianne Cartisano, superintendent of Miller Place School District. “The District aims to motivate each student to dream big and work towards achieving their goals. We hope to inspire them, as well as provide them with opportunities to speak with individuals who had aspirations similar to those of our students.”

Spearheaded by NCRMS’s librarian Ronnie Farrell, students were eager to meet Ms. Bowling, learn more about her passion for writing, and dive deeper into the book’s underlining message. Members of the NCRMS Book Club had several questions for Ms. Bowling including how old she was when she first realized she wanted to be a writer and what was her favorite pet Ms. Bowling’s enthusiasm and eagerness to answer each student’s question made for a very engaging and productive visit. The Skype visit concluded with a sneak peek into Ms. Bowling’s upcoming book Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus, which is pending release for September 2019.

Ms. Bowling’s Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus is a tremendous story of hope, strength, and letting the light shine on who you truly are. Aven, the book’s main character, who was born with no arms was faced with new challenges as her family relocated to Arizona. With two new pals who face differences of their own, Aven learns that their light can shine just as brightly as anyone else’s. The heartwarming and inspiring story taught Miller Place’s students the significance of acceptance and understanding.

Dusti Bowling, who currently resides in Arizona with her family and army of pets, has had a passion for reading since her youth. She composes various books for young adult and middle grade students.

NCRMS Students Buzz About Geography

The Miller Place School District is celebrating the success of three notable students—Christopher Barton, Michael Drago and Sofia Wyllie—from North Country Road Middle School (NCRMS) who recently competed for the National Geographic GeoBee competition. The academic competition, held annually, is designed to promote geographic knowledge among young people in the United States.

North Country Road’s winners—Christopher Barton, 1st place; Michael Drago, 2nd place; and Sofia Wylli, 3rd place—were ranked as the building’s highest scorers for this year’s competition. The National Geographic GeoBee includes three levels of competition: school, state and national. The school’s champion—Christopher—then takes a proctored online qualifying exam for the state level and the top 100 ranked students in each state are chosen to represent their school. State champions then travel to national Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to compete in the national championship.

The contest aims to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world, and increase public awareness about geography. Students compete for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee Champion.
