The Miller Place School District recently organized an opportunity for students at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School to be joined by their parents and guardians for a fun and exciting evening filled with educational games.  The annual Family Fun Night is a building-wide initiative that is intended to help families become more involved in their children’s education in a positive, stress-free way.

During the event, parents and children worked together to play board games, parachute activities and compete in a series of academic challenges. Students also walked their parents through the many projects and classroom activities they’ve completed thus far during the 2017-2018 school year. Parents and students rotated between activities, giving parents the opportunity to experience the students’ daily gym activities and test their knowledge of fourth grade curriculum.

The Miller Place School District recently hosted the Bright Star Children’s Theatre performance of an interactive, biographical show about Jackie Robinson at the Laddie A. Decker Elementary School. The show was arranged as part of an initiative to showcase American heroes to help students connect with influential figures in American history while also learning lessons applicable to their daily lives.

During the performance, professional actors dressed in elaborate costumes, acted out Jackie Robinson’s story, from growing up in rural Georgia to his ascent as a Major League Baseball Hall of Fame icon. Student volunteers from the audience also joined the actors onstage to learn about how to overcome bullying without fighting back, and at the end of the performance, students were made aware of the prejudicial struggles a key figure in American history faced.

Nationally Renowned Performer Jared Campbell Teaches Miller Place Students to Create a Culture of Respect and Reflection

 

The Miller Place School District recently welcomed back nationally renowned musical performer Jared Campbell as part of the District’s ongoing dedication to creating a culture of respect both in and out of school, and teaching students skills they will use for the rest of their lives.

During the event, Mr. Campbell taught Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School students about creating a positive culture through music. Campbell performed an interactive musical show, “The Blue Project,” in which students sang and clapped while learning important lessons about the value of self-reflection, overcoming obstacles and having a positive outlook on life.

Two Miller Place High School students were recently recognized for their excellence in physical education classes during a recent Suffolk ZONE Physical Education awards ceremony. Students Tyler Ammirato and Keara Thomson were selected by their physical education teachers to receive the “Outstanding Senior Students in Physical Education for 2017-2018” award based on their exemplary effort, attitude, conduct and compassion within the curriculum of physical education.

The Miller Place School District is committed to offering a rigorous physical education program. This recognition is a testament to the District’s ongoing mission to promote student health and wellness.

The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance distributes this award once per year to outstanding students.

The Miller Place School District recently held a National Letter of Intent signing celebration, which recognized the accomplishments of six students from Miller Place High School who will be playing sports on the collegiate level after graduation.

The Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently held its annual Unity Day celebration to take a stand against bullying and instill a strong sense of camaraderie and inclusion within the student body. In partnership with the National Bullying Prevention Center, the Miller Place School District organized this event to unite students in kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Students showed their support by wearing a uniform shirt, their favorite team jersey, or a homemade shirt representing their favorite number to school. Each student in the school showcased his or her number to show that every moment and every student counts.

 

As part of a District initiative to promote childhood literacy, more than 120 Miller Place School District third-fifth grade students at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently participated in the New York State Public Library “Build a Better World” reading initiative. Over the summer students were encouraged to go to New York public libraries, check out and read books, and then look to reach different levels of achievement.

 

There were various levels of achievement and potential prizes to be won. To align with the theme of “Build A Better World”, the levels were an Architect, Construction Worker, Electrician, or a Building Inspector. Tasks to achieve each level included filling out graphic organizers, creating book reports and blogging about their literary experiences and critical interpretations. Student raffles ranged from a book baskets, family passes to Fink’s Family Farm, Sky Zone, and the grand prize of an Amazon Echo Dot. The culminating activity consisted of students celebrated their success by participating in a variety of fun educational games and word-based challenges during a “Build a Better World” –themed extravaganza at school. In recognition of their accomplishments, each student received a construction hat and reading certificate.

 

Miller Place High School football players and cheerleaders recently wore gold to their football game against Port Jefferson to support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The event was in honor of Tommy Scully, a Miller Place student who passed away last year at the age of 12 due to a brain tumor. The players wore gold socks and the cheerleaders wore gold ribbons to show their support for cancer research. By participating in this event, Miller Place School District students learned to give back to their community and support those suffering from pediatric cancer.

The Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School recently held its annual homecoming parade and football game to celebrate the spirit and excitement of the Miller Place community. The parade featured student-designed and decorated floats celebrating the history and culture of great American cities. Homecoming King Matthew Buscemi and Homecoming Queen Moksha Mehra rode in the senior class’s New Orleans-themed float.

The senior class was named the winners of a competition between the grades for the most innovative homecoming float, best hallway decorations, displaying the most class spirit, the most fundraising and collected the most goods for a food and goods drive. As the first place recipients, the senior class received $500 in prize money from the Student Council funds. During the homecoming festivities, each class also worked to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The parade began at the Miller Place Fire Department and culminated on the football field at the Miller Place High School. The Miller Place High School cheerleaders, groups of students from each school in the District, the Miller Place High School pep band and local community members marched alongside the different floats.
